Fresh Cigar

How can you tell if you cigar is still fresh and not stale (I guess is the way to describe it) BEFORE you smoke it?

I typically give the cigar a firm but not too tight pinch throughout it to check for any hard spots or inconsistencies.  Also inspecting the foot is a good idea since if it is beginning to fray, it's a sign that it may have sat in poor conditions for a while.

Good way is to give it a light but firm squeeze. If you see or hear the wrapper crack, chances are it is too dry.
